I was fortunate enough to spend Veterans Day in the field exercising my 2nd amendment right to bare arms. And it was Ranger's first time out hunting. He hunted hard but there just didn't seem to be any birds. We hunted the James Daughtrey WMA (Wildlife Management Area). We hunted in compartments 9 & 10 and we had the entire place to ourselves. Ranger pointed a few times but the cover was so thick and there was so much scrub brush that I could not get back into the areas that he was pointing to flush any birds. My guess is that the quail would just run further into the cover when we approached if there were any at all. It was fun anyway just to get out in the field with him and watch him work. Hopefully on our next outing we can find some birds and really put him to the test.

Opening day for the South Zone saw a good number of birds flying. If I could shoot straight I probably would have shot my limit. It was a real enjoyable time in the field with family and friends. I am looking forward to getting out again in this next weekend to see if I can refine my shot taking and maybe get that limit.

I was able to get out and hunt on public hunting land for the first time this season. I hunted on the Roddy Rd & Loop 1604 unit here in San Antonio. We saw a good number of birds but they were all flying to high or in an area that was away from our blind. I was still able to pop off about 5 shots but wasn't able to hit anything. I will blame it on the birds flying to high. Hoping to get out on September 20th for opening of the South Zone and maybe have better luck. I was unable to take out the dog as they don't allow dogs on the Roddy Rd. Unit. Maybe get him out next time. Happy hunting.
